Danube riverside: BETWEEN studio designs new park square
A new park square on the Danube riverside is planned for Bratislava, which will include rain gardens, green islands and more than thirty trees, providing a spot for pleasant relaxation in all seasons. The project results from an architectural competition announced by WOAL, in which Cresco Real Estate and J&T Real Estate (JTRE) have a stake. BETWEEN studio submitted the winning design.
The 1,800 sqm square’s design is in accordance with the MIB’s Manual of Public Spaces - Principles and Standards of Greenery in the City. The square will promote relaxation, culture, and riverside usability, and improve the locality’s microclimate. The emphasis is on sustainability and high-quality architecture.
“The competition conditions were agreed with the city and urban district. These included using tree quantity and type that in years to come will provide welcome summer shade in the square,” adds our executive director Ján Krnáč.
Eleven Slovak and Czech landscape studios took part. After careful consideration, the jury selected BETWEEN studio’s submission. The square will be named after Count Lanfranconi - the engineer and inventor who contributed to regulating the Danube and protecting Bratislava from floods.
Lanfranconi Square aims to connect nature with urban life by delivering new vibrant greenery and a pleasant public space to the Danube embankment.
